DN: Occupied Forest Stops Dirty Coal

Amy Goodman of Democracy Now visits a group of forest dwellers occupying a portion of the Hambach Forest in Rhineland, western Germany.  The squatters are preventing the remaining ten percent of the Hambach Forest from being leveled and mined for lignite, dirty brown coal, which produces highest level of CO2 when burned. The RWE Co. mine is the largest open-pit coal mine in Europe, located less than a day’s ride from Bonn, Germany, where the COPP23 Climate Conference is being held.  Watching the young activists occupying the forest just gives me hope that there is a future for the human race.
